It May Be Too Late to Stop Sale of Land to Developers Next to Palmetto Boat Ramp
There is a pending sale of the lot, directly across from the Palmetto boat ramp. The lot, used to be a Shell gas station, however it was bought by the city and cleared several years ago. It was put up for sale, but over the years, boaters have sued the lot for parking, since there are not many spots near the Palmetto boat ramp The pending sale of this lot, has created some controversy. Palmetto residents say even if they were to drive to other boat ramps within Manatee County, those ramps do not have the capacity to handle them. There have been some future plans talked about to build a bigger Boat Ramp, in Manatee County, near the Sunshine Skyway Fishing Pier. However, those plans are way off into the future. There is no current budget or official plan for this ramp.
Manatee County Commissioners says they are working on adding parking spaces at several of Manatee County's Boat Ramps... Fort Hamer, we they could possibly triple the number of parking spaces . They are also looking to increase the number of spaces at the Kingfish boat ramp, and possibly at Coquina.
Palmetto residents say those increases are needed in Manatee County, however, they are now where close to Palmetto, so that doesn't help them at all.
The City of Palmetto says that information on the sale of the property directly across from the Palmetto Boat Ramp, has been available for several years and that there are two bidders currently focused on that property.
