On Monday (19/5/20), a wastewater main break shut down the westbound lanes of State Road 64 East, just east of Lakewood Ranch Boulevard. Drivers needed to find alternate routes, around this road closure for over a day as repair work was made. .

Well, now we have more information on what caused the road closure and exactly what happened.

Thousands of gallons of sewage spilled as a result, according to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection,

Manatee County staff responded on Monday (10/5/20) at approximately 8:26 a.m. to a report of a sewer overflowing near State Road 64 and 117th Street East.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection reports that an undocumented valve in a manhole buried under 5 feet of road, failed because of corrosion.

As a result, sewage filled the manhole and flowed from under the roadway.

Approximately 23,000 gallons of sewage spilled.

Crews isolated the leak by 11:35 a.m., and tanker trucks recovered some of the spilled sewage. The area was washed and contaminated soil was removed.

Water samples have also been taken after some of the sewage entered a storm drain that flows into Gates Creek, which flows into the Manatee River.

Results from those samples will determine the scope and impact of this spill and if further cleanup is needed.
