It is World Breastfeeding Week - August 1st - 7th - So Many Health Benefits...

According to The Department of Health of-Manatee County

For babies, the benefits of breastfeeding can include:

· Fewer ear and respiratory tract infections

· Minimal risk of developing diabetes, asthma or allergies

· Minimal risk of childhood obesity

· Help in developing jaw and facial muscles

For mothers, the benefits can include:

· Decreased risk of breast, ovarian and other cancers

· Decreased risk of type 2 diabetes

· Quicker return to pre-pregnancy weight

· Less postpartum bleeding

In addition, there is evidence that breastfeeding can help prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) by improving a baby’s overall health, reducing potential stressors and making waking up from sleep easier.

Breastfeeding also benefits a family’s finances and the environment, reducing medical costs – fewer trips to the doctor to treat ear infections, respiratory infections, etc. -- and alleviating the need for manufacturing, packaging, shipping and disposing of plastic bottles and nipples and baby formula.

About the Florida Department of Health The department, nationally accredited by the Public Health Accreditation Board, works to protect, promote and improve the health of all people in Florida through integrated state, county and community efforts.

Manatee WIC Services

Peer counselors and lactation professionals can provide counseling by phone (hotline is available outside of normal business hours) and Skype (latch assessments under specific circumstances).

WIC is also completing one-on-one prenatal classes by phone.

Once the threat of COVID-19 passes, Manatee WIC plans once again to offer face-to-face services. These would include prenatal breastfeeding classes in both English and Spanish, a weekly support group and a class to educate the fathers of newborns on the roles they can play in the breastfeeding process.

WIC will also offer community presentations, including bimonthly classes with the TeenAge Pregnancy Program and SOLVE Maternity Homes.

For more information on all of these services, call Manatee WIC at (941) 741-3400 and ask for breastfeeding support.
