A contractor working with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), will begin an wide-ranging beach renourishment project to replenish a 5.5-mile stretch of beach on Anna Maria Island from northern Holmes Beach to the southern end of Coquina Beach at Longboat Pass, at the Longboat Key Bridge.
Crews are now getting beach renourishment equipment ready for the project, which is scheduled to begin during this first week of July.
The project will start at 78th Street North in Holmes Beach and continue south to Coquina Beach. The project will include restocking about 300 feet of beach per day. If there are no long weather delays, the project should be complete by the end of October 2020.
The sand for the project will be delivered by barge from an offshore area about 2,000 feet offshore of the north end of Anna Maria Island, near Passage Key.
During this beach renourishment, there will be portions of the beach, that will be closed during active construction, this will prevent the public from access to certain parts of the beach.
The overall cost is $17.3 million. The breakdown works like this. Federal money will cover $8 million. The state of Florida is contributing $4.6 million and the local government portion is $4.6 million.
