Sarasota National Cemetery needs volunteers to place flags for Memorial Day
Each Memorial Day Weekend, Volunteers Remember our Heroes. This Year More Volunteers are needed at our Sarasota National Cemetery to help place American Flags on Memorial Day Weekend.
What happens is simple. It all begins with an American flag, placed at every grave site for Memorial Day.
Flags for Fallen Vets, is an all volunteer non-profit that coordinates the event each year, through the direction of local coordinator and organizer Meshia Richardson Judd. She spends countless hours, fundraising year-round, as well as Looking for volunteers to help.
In the beginning, when the event started, several years ago… there were about 400 volunteers, and approximately 9,200 flags were placed at Sarasota National Cemetery. . This year over 20,000 Flags will be placed, with over a thousand volunteers needed to make it all happen.
Nearly 10 interments a day are held at Sarasota National Cemetery, as a Hero’s final resting place.
The Flags for Fallen Vets and the Memorial Day Weekend Flag Placement mission, is similar to the annual December, Wreaths Across America Wreath Laying…
A person takes their last breath twice, once when they leave this beautiful earth and the second time, when their name is never said aloud.
That is why as each Flag is placed at every grave site, the Hero is thanked for their service and their name is said out loud.
There’s still time to sign up and help for this year’s event on Memorial Day Weekend. The event is Saturday, May25th, 2024 at 8:00am at Sarasota National Cemetery

On Saturday, June 1st, 2024 at 8:00am, volunteers are also needed to help retire the flags.
