FDOT to replace DeSoto Bridge in Bradenton with a New Bridge, the Same Size
At a Manatee Chamber of Commerce event Wednesday, April 12th… The Florida Department of Transportation revealed their plans to replace the DeSoto Bridge.
FDOT says the plans for a new bridge which will replace the current DeSoto Bridge does not include more lanes of traffic.
The current DeSoto Bridge will need structural assistance in the future, so a replacement will be needed.
FDOT says that at this point, if they go back to the planning stage to design a wider bridge they will run out of time for funding, they have now for the replacement bridge.
They have $150 million allocated now for the project.
FDOT says that after the new bridge is built, it will have the capability of adding more lanes if needed, which the current DeSoto Bridge does not.
The DeSoto Bridge replacement project is set to begin construction in 2027.
Many people were hoping for a third bridge connecting downtown Bradenton and Palmetto, however... that doesn't appear to be anywhere in the future plans... However, we may see future additions and more construction, as they will most likely need to add to this new bridge after it is completed, in 2028 or beyond.
