A Roundabout Could be Coming to Longboat Key

Design work is underway for a roundabout at Gulf of Mexico Drive and Broadway Street on the North End of Longboat Key.

The speed limit on Gulf of Mexico Drive just south of the Bridge that connects Longboat Key to Bradenton Beach is 35 mph.

In that area of Gulf of Mexico Dr. and Broadway, there are a lot of pedestrians crossing that stretch of road to get to the beach. There are also pedestrians crossing to the opposite side of the street, where restaurant's like Mar Vitsa, Shore and Whitney's are located.

There is a signalized crosswalk a few hundred yards north, between Broadway and North Shore Road, but that feature isn't always apparent to those unfamiliar with the area..  

Initial renderings of the proposed traffic circle include crosswalks on all four sides and a medians funneling traffic into the circles from both side of Broadway and Gulf of Mexico Drive.
