Legendary "outlaw" artist Johnny Cash was made a sheriff's deputy in Tennessee back in 1979. This week, a replica of his Davidson County deputy sheriff commission card was handed over to the Johnny Cash museum in Nashville, Tennessee, by Sheriff Daron Hall after it was found by his photographer. The card was rumored to exist for decades, but the whereabouts of the original remain unknown. While Cash spent a lot of nights in local jails, he never went to prison or committed a felony. He was also a vocal, lifelong advocate for the prison population. Hall says that as a deputy, Cash "would have been more interested in what we can do to help the person who is about to be arrested" than trying to rack up big arrest numbers.
