Driver Dies After Vehicle Plunges In Canal Following Crash On Turnpike

Miami-Dade, FL - A fatal crash occurred on Florida's Turnpike in Miami-Dade County, resulting in the death of a driver whose car submerged in a canal after a collision with a tractor-trailer.​

The incident took place Friday morning in the northbound lanes near Mile Marker 8. According to Florida Highway Patrol officials, the driver of a gray Hyundai collided with a tractor-trailer, causing the Hyundai to veer off the roadway into a grassy area.

The vehicle subsequently overturned and landed upside-down in a canal, becoming completely submerged. ​

Aerial footage from the scene showed the submerged vehicle, with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue crews, including divers, responding promptly.

Divers searched the water and located the driver, an adult male, who was extricated and transported to a hospital.

Despite rescue efforts, the driver succumbed to his injuries.

His identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

The crash led to temporary closures on the Turnpike, with all lanes reopening around 3:30 p.m.

No further information is available at this time as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
