Dad Builds Stage & Podium in Front Yard For Daughter's College Graduation

A dad in Memphis, Tennessee, wasn't going to let his daughter's college career come to an end without a proper graduation. The AP reports that this week, Torrence Burson pulled out all the stops staging a mock commencement for daughter Gabrielle Pierce. He built a stage and a podium in their front yard and blared "Pomp and Circumstance" over a loudspeaker as neighbors stood in the street to watch Pierce receive a diploma. “I went to bed and woke up in the middle of the night and said, ‘That’s it. I’m just going to bring the graduation here,'” Burson says. He also told Pierce, "After all those years, you’re going to walk across somebody’s stage if I have to build you one myself." Pierce says, "People were driving by yelling congratulations,” and called the ceremony, “Better than the actual graduation, because it was more personal,” while Burson adds, "Regardless of the dollar figure, what it took to pull this off. If I had to do this over again, I’d probably do it even bigger."
