Carnival Cruise Line announced Monday that it plans to begin resuming some North American cruises beginning in August, AP reports. Eight ships will take off on August 1 or shortly after, from Galveston, Texas, Miami, or Port Canaveral, Florida. Among the destinations for those cruises are the Bahamas and Cozumel, Mexico, the company says on its website. Cruise ships are currently docked by a CDC no sail order, which was issued March 14 and isn't set to expire until July 24. Carnival said it is still determining its safety protocols for the upcoming cruises. “We continue to engage with the CDC and government officials at a variety of levels about new protocols we would implement prior to a return to sailing,” the company said. “We will also be in discussions with officials in the destinations we visit.” Some experts are skeptical. Tara Smith, a professor of epidemiology at Kent State University says, “everything would still have to be distanced. Dancing, concerts on board, other types of entertainment? Doubtful. Pools? Probably overcrowded. Dining? No idea how they’d do it.”
