All Faiths Food Bank to Kick off Campaign Against Summer Hunger on April 1

This year, the Campaign Against Summer Hunger returns once again from April 1st until May 15th.

No one can tell hunger by the face of a child. Because smiles mask it and laughter muffles it, child hunger is deceptive, and it exists everywhere. Each year across Sarasota and DeSoto Counties, school nutrition programs provide children in need with up to ten healthy meals each week. But when schools close for the summer, how do these children find the help they need?

This year, All Faiths Food Bank lead its Campaign Against Summer Hunger for the sixth year running. The Campaign has become the community’s strongest line of defense against child hunger during the summer months.

“When the school year ends, hunger begins for 21,000 students in Sarasota County” has been the message and motivation behind the Campaign Against Summer Hunger. Unfortunately, the number is far greater when you include the younger brothers and sisters of these students that are not yet in the system and the almost 5,000 children in DeSoto County. Conservatively, the total number of kids at risk over the summer could exceed 40,000.

With the compassionate help of donors, volunteers and more than 150 community partners, this year the food bank is determined to reach more children, with more nutritious food, than ever before.Summer hunger is a problem that we can solve together.
