An elementary school teacher in Chicago wants people to understand the financial challenges that she faces by working in a low-income area -- and she was shocked to find a lot of open ears -- and wallets -- on a recent flight.
Kimberly Bermudez was talking to a fellow passenger on board a Southwest Airlines flight and mentioned that her students, many of whom live in poverty and are homeless, can't afford things like school supplies.
Little did she know that while she was talking to the other passenger, she actually had a much larger audience that overheard what she was saying.
The passenger she was talking to asked for her contact information and said his company may want to make a donation to her school. Just then, other passengers started handed her money. By the end of the flight, she received $530 from strangers.
Kimberly shared her story in a Facebook post and wrote, "My heart is in complete shock and awe right now. When the world seems crazy, there are always good people."
