Florida Man Scammed Out of Thousands of Dollars by Fake Sweepstakes Scam

Publishers Clearing House Scam Alert Update: Beware of Fraudsters Pretending to be real PCH Employees

A Volusia County, Florida man who mistakenly believed he had won a multimillion-dollar sweepstake from Publishers Clearing House said he spent more than $250,000 trying to collect the prize.

Publishers Clearing House (also known as PCH), is warning consumers that scammers fraudulently pose as company representatives and urge people to send money in exchange for prizes, something PCH says it never does.

The victim spoke, due to safety and privacy concerns, only wanting to be identified by his middle name, George, was tricked. George was told he won a new Mercedes Benz and a gold ring.

However, before he could collect the prizes, George said the caller instructed him to wire money to an offshore account to cover the cost of stamps on legal documents.

The callers later requested more money for taxes, storage fees and other expenses.

On multiple occasions, the callers informed George they were on their way to Volusia County with his prize money.
