A Police Officer Helps 2 Kids Who Were Scammed at Their Lemonade Stand

A couple of kids in Oregon were trying to make some extra money this summer when they got scammed. Preston Reid and Blaze Chase were hard at work when a man came up, ordered lemonade and paid them with a counterfeit $100 bill. The boys are only 12, but Preston quickly realized something wasn’t right.

Blaze tried to stall by slowly counting back 97 of their hard-earned dollars back to the man, but just as he finished, the guy jumped in his car to leave. The boys tried to snap photos of his license plate, but they weren’t clear enough.

That’s when their moms got involved and called the cops. Officer Hudson Warden with the Eugene Police Department arrived on the scene and was outraged that someone would steal from children. He went to the ATM, took out $100 of his own money and gave it to the boys to make up for their loss.

He says the reason he did it was simple, “I wanted to show them that people are good.”

A bitter sweet story for the day...

We received this note from a local resident:

“Our young son and his friend decided to start a little lemonade stand in their neighborhood on a hot day making many of their neighbors happy while at the same time learning the meaning of an honest days work. Near the end of the day a man approached them with what appeared to be a counterfeit $100 note. Before they could have it checked at the convenience store nearby the criminal took all the money they had worked hard to earn that day and drove off. My son and his friend then called the EPD who responded right away. The kids were of course heartbroken, in tears and totally distraught. Officer Judson Warden responded with compassion, kindness and the utmost professionalism. He truly exemplified what it means to be an outstanding police officer in our community. And then as he left he bought a lemonade, paying with a $100 bill of his own and refused any change. My family wants to send our heartfelt thanks to him and all the officers who selflessly protect and serve the people of Eugene every day. God bless you officer Warden!”
