First U.S. female figure skater to ever land a triple axel at the Olympics

Mirai Nagasu became the first U.S. female figure skater to ever land a triple axel at the Olympics when she nailed the complicated jump during the team competition at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang. She is now also just the third female Olympian from any country to successfully land the move, which she pulled off 21 seconds into her free skate. "To nail it the way I did--even out of the corner of my eye, I could see my teammates standing out of excitement," the 24-year-old Nagasu said after finishing her routine. "And at that moment I wanted to stop the music and get off, but I still had my whole program ahead of me and to complete the performance to the best of my ability is really exciting." Nagasu's routine not only earned a standing ovation, but helped the U.S. figure skaters win the bronze medal in the team competition.
