Miami-Dade Launches Marine Patrol Initiative To Address Manatee Deaths

Extra eyes will be watching you on Biscayne Bay this weekend with the launch of the manatee education initiative. Miami-Dade's Marine Patrol Unit will be out and about in Biscayne Bay nabbing boaters ignoring slow speed and no-wake zones in a preemptive strike against avoidable manatee deaths. Chief Bay Officer Irela Bague says they recorded 15 manatee deaths in 2019, 33 in 2020 and 14 in the first two-and-a-half months of this year. She says sea grass die off is the biggest threat, but boaters are careless too.
