Confessed Stoneman Douglas Shooter Set For Fall Trial

It's looking like the confessed Marjory Stoneman Douglas High shooter will be heading to trial this fall.

Judge Elizabeth Scherer told the defense and prosecution this afternoon, "I want you all to look toward September as our goal as far as starting jury selection and pre-trial motions."

She added, now that COVID-19 restrictions are easing, the Chief Judge anticipates the Broward Courthouse will be ready to handle the trial. When it comes to jury selection, it could be held in the larger jury room to ensure proper spacing.

Nikolas Cruz's attorneys have voiced concern about not being able to get into the jail to meet with their client in more than a year, and they're just now beginning to travel out of state to meet witnesses.

Scherer said they still have five months to get their cases together.

The next status hearing is set for May 25th.
