Thousands of kids get backpacks filled with food

With many students across the country getting ready for the new school year, the charity group Blessings in a Backpack is in full swing, providing food to students in need each weekend.

Group organizers noticed how some students weren’t getting much food away from school between Friday and Monday, so they make sure these kids are able to take food home each Friday to keep them going.

When they started, they were able to give food to 42 kids at three schools.

Since then, things have grown -- and Blessings in a Backpack now feeds 87,000 kids in 45 states.

Everyone involved knows it’s about more than just packing backpacks. Instead, it’s about showing students that the community cares about them -- and keeping their hopes and dreams strong while those students try their best in school each week.
