Now a GRAMMY-nominated singer-songwriter, Mickey Guyton reflects on her earliest memories of developing her passion for music. The Arlington, Texas-born artist credits her Grandma Rosemary with inspiring her to become the star she is today, she shared as she debuted a special acoustic version of one of her heartfelt ballads.

Guyton teamed up with the Alzheimer’s Association to raise awareness for Alzheimer’s disease during Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month, per a press release issued on Friday (June 2). The Alzheimer’s Association’s Music Moments series delves into the powerful, emotional connection between music and the most special moments in life that people never want to forget. Guyton shared her personal connection to music, along with other country artists — including Lauren Alaina, Lee Ann Womack, Brett Eldredge and Sara Evans — and artists of other genres.

Through the Music Moments effort, Guyton delivered a stunning version of “How You Love Someone,” which she released in October 2022. Guyton, TIME’s 2022 Breakthrough Artist of the Year, also spoke about her personal connection to Music Moments because of her grandmother in a behind-the-scenes interview.

“My earliest memories of music are in church with my Grandma Rosemary,” Guyton wrote in an Instagram caption. “She played a big role in inspiring the artist I am today. I recorded this special acoustic version of ‘How You Love Someone’ for the [Alzheimer’s Association]’s [Music Moments] project in honor of my Grandma who had Alzheimer’s disease. 💜”

“Music can transcend you to a moment in time shared with a loved one, and that’s the power of music and sound,” Guyton said, per the Alzheimer’s Association. “A lot of who I am today and what brought me to country music is because of my grandma Rosemary, who had Alzheimer’s. I’m honored to sing ‘How You Love Someone’ for the Alzheimer’s Association Music Moments campaign and I hope that people facing Alzheimer’s who hear this song can feel the love in the lyrics because for me it reminds me of the love and memories I shared with my grandma.”

Guyton reflected on memories with her grandmother, the story behind “How You Love Someone,” inspirations in her music and more in her Alzheimer’s Association interview. Watch it here:

“Music Moments taps into the universal connection between music and special moments in life that no one wants to lose to Alzheimer’s and other dementias,” said Joanne Pike, president and CEO, Alzheimer’s Association. “With the support of powerful voices like Mickey Guyton, we are able to reach greater numbers of people to encourage more conversations about the disease and inform about the resources and information available through the Alzheimer’s Association.”
