U.S. Soccer argued in a court filing this week that the reason it pays women's national team players less than men is because the women are less skilled athletes, while the men have more responsibility. "The job of a [men’s national team player] carries more responsibility within U.S. Soccer than the job of a [women’s national team] player," the organization wrote as part of the women's team's ongoing equal-pay lawsuit. According to Buzz Feed, the organization also claims there's “indisputable science” proving that women should be paid less because the men’s team “requires a higher level of skill” than the women’s team. When grilled about these claims by U.S. Soccer lawyers, star women's plays Carli Lloyd reportedly replied, “Shall we fight it out to see who wins and then we get paid more?”
