Know When It's Too Hot to Walk Your Dog

As summer heat increases, dog owners need to understand when it's too hot to walk their pets safely, especially if traveling across pavement like most city dwellers.

There is a simple rule for sweltering days: If you can rest your hand on pavement for seven seconds, it's OK to proceed on the walk. If not, you could be burning your poor dog's paws.

When the temperature outside hits 87, asphalt can be a paw-burning 143 degrees--and 135 degree asphalt can fry an egg in five minutes.

Other tips include walking on grass as much as possible, taking morning walks, and always paying close attention to how your pooch is acting. If they seem uncomfortable, it may be best to head to a cooler spot.

Follow these guidelines to keep your pal happily walked and healthy this summer.
