A World War II veteran has topped the Amazon singles chart ahead of Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber this week. British veteran Jim Radford was just 15 years old on D-Day when he served as a ship's galley boy, helping supply the British Navy. Believed to be the youngest-known D-Day veteran, Radford turned his experiences of that day into a song called "The Shores of Normandy" in 1969.
Now, 75 years after D-Day, he released a new version of the emotional ballad and it soared to the top of the Amazon singles chart. Profits from sales of the single are benefiting the British Normandy Memorial. "It's very important to me and other veterans that there should be a place like this where people can come and reflect because we're not going to be around for much longer to tell the story," Radford says. "And the story needs to be told because people need to learn lessons from it."
