The Manatee County Sheriff's Office received a report of a new scam. The scammers claim that you are the recipient of proceeds from a judgement and in order to receive the judgment, you must send them the bank transfer fee since it involves an international bank.
They will also claim that an attorney in California will handle the transaction and will send you a fake letter from the General Console of the Treasury Department to try to make it look legitimate.
They will state that you only have a limited amount of time to make the payment or you will lose out on the judgement. This is purely a scam and you will never receive a judgement as they claim.
As always, don't give money out over the phone and don't answer emails or phone calls from people you don't know. If you ever have question about a potential scam, please call the Crime Prevention Unit of the Sheriff's Office at (941) 747-3011 Ext. 2500.
