A charity group in California has been putting smiles on the faces of children in hospitals by giving them very special crayons created out of broken pieces.
Since being founded in 2011, The Crayon Initiative has collected more than 20 million old crayons from across the United States, melted and remolded them -- and then donated the new crayons to over 100 children’s hospitals.
In order to process the crayons, volunteers tear the paper off the crayon pieces and then sort them by color. After sorting, the volunteers melt everything down and mold them into the full-sized crayons that the kids can use.
This year, the goal is to create and donate 200,000 packs of crayons. That will lead to a lot of fun for the kids -- as well as a lot of smiles.
